VoiceUp Lagos is a public speaking and confidence-building project designed to empower students in secondary schools in Lagos State through practical training and mentorship.
A movement to help students find their voice
This Initiative is a public speaking and confidence-building project designed to empower students in secondary schools in Lagos State. The initiative equips teenagers with critical communication skills, public speaking, debate, storytelling, leadership communication, and articulate self-expression, ultimately improving their academic confidence, social engagement, and long-term success.
The project will run weekly sessions in selected schools within different Local Government Areas in Lagos, supported by trained and equipped tutors, and strategic partners.
The year will culminate in a Statewide Inter-School Public Speaking Competition, showcasing the transformation of participating students. VoiceUp Lagos is designed as an annual project with a sustainability model that ensures continuity beyond the debut edition.

Why VoiceUp?
A significant number of secondary school students in underserved communities lack access to opportunities that develop effective communication, public speaking, and self-expression skills. Beyond the absence of structured training, many students in these environments often internalize the belief that their background, school, or community determines the value of their voice. However, this challenge is not exclusive to students in underserved communities; many students across different backgrounds also struggle with public speaking, confidence, and effective communication due to limited exposure and intentional development.
This highlights a broader issue: a student’s ability to communicate confidently should not be determined by their environment, access, or social background, but by the opportunities available to help them develop that ability.
The VoiceUp Initiative seeks to bridge this gap by creating intentional spaces where students, regardless of their background or school environment, can discover their voices, develop communication confidence, and learn that their ideas deserve to be heard.
